"英语论坛--英汉对照"的书摘……
I will depart China after three and a half years
working here in the Chinese capital. 1 leave with very
strong, mixed feelings. On the one hand, 1 look for-
ward to being closer to my family and friends back in
the United States. On the other, 1 know 1 will sorely
miss so much about China.
Most importantly, ofcourse, 1 will miss my many
Chinese friends all across the country. The tremendous
hospitality 1 have always enjoyed in Chinese homes re-
mains unmatched. I'll miss the generosity and warmth
of my Chinese friends -- not to mention(1) the wonder-
ful food! During the past three and a half years, my
parents have visited me twice and one of my sisters has
come once. They, too, were deeply moved by the kind-
ness ofthe Chinese people they met. As 1 leave China,
on my family's behalf(2)and on my own: 1 thank you.
I will miss many things about Beijing. 1 have often
ridden on the subway and buses and in taxis. Over the
years, 1 have had countless discussions with people I've
met on the subway or bus or with taxi drivers. I've cer-
tainly enjoyed these conversations and, through them,
learned a lot about China. 1 have discovered that Chi-
nese spend a lot of time thinking about the same kinds of
questions Americans think about, such as how to pro-
vide the best educational opportunities for their chil-
dren. I'll miss those conversations, but I'll take the
knowledge I've gained from them back to the United
States to share with my family and friends.
I will also miss the little things that make Beijing
the special place it is: the famous Beijing "hutongs" and
"siheyuan" and the closely-knit communities which in-
habit them; the men and women who sing Peking opera
at Tiantan Park; the Qianmen teahouses; the streetside
barbers who cut hair - and offer advice on all maner of
problems for a few yuan; the English corners across
the city where I've made many friends; and the yellow
"miandi" taxis - and the fearlessness of their drivers.
These and so many other aspects of this great city have
left vivid images in my mind, images which will be im-
possible to forget.
It's never easy to say goodbye, and for me, this
time it's harder than most. These three and a half years
have been the most fulfilling ofmy life, owing in great
measure?to the love and support you, my friends and
readers, have offered me. So it is ironic that now, as 1
prepare to leave, 1 cannot find the words to express the
depth of my gratitude to all of you.
