'A bit on the side' refers to illicit sex, that is, sex with someone other than your regular partner. You might, for example, refer to an extra-marital affair as 'a bit on the side'.
'A bit on the side' can also refer to the person (originally only the female partner, but these days the male partner too) that you are having a bit of sex with. Eg:"Did you know that that blond is the manager's bit on the side?"The following is an excerpt from a newspaper advice column:"Since you enjoy making love with your husband, this other chap is teally nothing but your bit on the side. Unfortunately bits on the side can break a marriage into bits."
The New statesman (26.6.1986)headlines a review of Rebecca West's novel Sunflower, 'A bit on the side',an oblique reference to the fact that Ms West was the mistress of a series of influential married men (including H G Wells and Lord Beaverbrook), but never the wife of any of them.
例如,你可以说婚外事件是‘a bit on the side’。
