'A bit on the side' refers to illicit sex, that is, sex with someone other than your regular partner. You might,for example, refer to an extra-marital affair as 'a bit on the side'.
'A bit on the side' can also refer to the person (originally only the female partner, but these days the male partner too) that you are having a bit of sex with. Eg:"Did you know that that blond is the manager's bit on the side?"The following is an excerpt from a newspaper advice column:"Since you enjoy making love with your husband,this other chap is teally nothing but your bit on the side. Unfortunately bits on the side can break a marriage into bits."
The New statesman (26.6.1986)headlines a review of Rebecca West's novel Sunflower, 'A bit on the side',an oblique reference to the fact that Ms West was the mistress of a series of influential married men (including H G Wells and Lord Beaverbrook), but never the wife of any of them.

杜念嘉，1919年生，渐江青田人。前国立中央大学哲学系肄业，国立暨南大学外文系毕业。曾任联合国文教科组织UNESCO研究员。1949年派往英国考察。1951年获英国对外文化协会研究奖金入牛津大学。1960年后主持伦敦中国翻译馆迄今。80年代在伦敦CHINA NOW季刊和EURASIA季刊均辟有专栏，以英语论中国文学和语言，并载多篇唐宋诗词英译。另有关于莎士比亚的研究论文如《从谚语看莎剧译文》、《东鳞西爪窥莎翁》等。曾在伦敦筹集一批图书捐赠中国莎士比亚研究会。
