1. A Country at the Heart of Europe
The Federal Republic of Austria is a land-
locked country situated at the heart of Europe.
It has an area of 83 800 square kilometres,
making it somewhat smaller than Zhejiang or
Jiangsu Province. Its froatiers exte for over
2600 kilometres and, moving clockwise from
tbe north, they border on Czechoslovakia,
Hungary, Yugoslavia, Italy, Switzerland.
Liechtenstein (which divides the Austro-
Swiss frontier for 30 kilometres') and Germany.
Because of its history and Central European
location, Austria is frequently referred to as
the "gateway" or "crossroads" hetween Eastern
and Western Europe and indeed between the
northern and southern countries of the con-
tinent.
Central European time applies in Austria.
So it is seven hours behind Beijing, according
to G. M. T. However, the clocks will be advanced
ons hour for summer time between March and
September.
Topographically, Austria is predominantly
an alpine country aad, in consequence. it bas a
great variety of beautiful scenery. The Alps?
stretch all the way through western Austria
(Vorarlberg, the Tyrol and Salzburg provinces)
and southward into the province of Carinthia.
They continue eastward with decreasing height,
to end up southwest of Vienna. The highest of
the alpine peaks in Austria is the Grossglockner
which has an elevation of 3 800 metres.
In contrast to the Alps, the smaller moun-
tains of the north and north-east of Austria
rarely rise above 950 metres and extend gently
downwards to the valley of the river Danube.
These northern mountains give way in the east
to the Marshland. The Vienna Basin scuth of
Vienna continnes into the great Hungarian
plain.
The Danube, which has its source in the
Black Forest region of Germany, enters Austria
at Passau and then flows eastward for more
than 320 kilometres, cutting through the cities of
Linz and Vienna, before crossing into Czecho-
slovakia. The Danube is 2 850 kilometres long
and flows through seven countries before
entering the Black Sea.
