本书分为三大部分:句子结构、动词和词类,每部分有7—8个单元不等。编写以1999年《大学英语教学大纲》以及大纲对英语四六级的要求为根据,针对大学学生实际问题,突出应用性和实用性。每单元第一部分(A)是与本单元知识有关的一组练习,第二部分(B)根据第一部分练习进行精当的语法解释,第三部分(C)则安排了更多的专项练习或综合练习。个别单元根据实际需要仅给出(B)部分或(C)部分。本书开始是综合自测题(Test Yourself),目的是让学生了解自己的语法水平,发现尚存的问题,以便能有针对性地使用本书。书末还附有两套语法全面测试题及其答案。

A. Underline the appositives in the following sentences,and then punctuate them.Remember that appositives follow the nouns they describe.

B.规则(Rules)

Rule l.解释名词意义的短语叫同位语,它们紧接在需解释的名词后,必须用逗号:

Anna Sutherland Bissel, the inventor of the carpet sweeper,went on to manage the Bissell Carpet Sweeper Co.

Friday is named for Frigg,a goddess of Scandinavian mythology.

Rule 2.如果短语对名词的意义理解很有必要,则不用逗号将它们分隔开来。请比较:

The novel Great Expectations is considered by many critics to be Charles Dickens’ greatest work.(novel和Expectations无逗号,因为狄更斯的小说很多,我们需要知道是那一本)

Charles Dickens’ fourteenth novel, Great Expectations,is considered by many critics to be his greatest work.(novel和Expectations有逗号,因为已知道是狄更斯的 fourteenth novel)

Rule 3.多数单个词同位语对名词的意义都是必要的,所以它们之间不用逗号:

My brother joe is married; my other brothers are single.

The word globoid means“shaped like a globe”.

Certain tones of the color pink are known to decrease anxiety.

7. Children also have free ice cream and free movies special privileges for this day only.

8. Tano a Korean spring festival used to be an agricultural holiday but is now a holiday for children.

9. In October Samoan children receive new clothes and new books on White Sunday their special holiday.

10. The holiday is called White Sunday because one of the gifts new clothes to wear to church is usually white.
